Earth Hour.
Earth Hour started off in 2007 with 2.2 million people turning their lights off in Sydney. A year down the track and this event had gained a global audience with up to 50 million people across 35 countries taking part in the event. Famous landmarks such as the the Eiffel Tower in Parisand The Empire State Building in New York plunged into darkness as the world joined together to raise awareness of climate change issues.
The work of Edward Bernays
Edward Bernays pioneered the use of social sciences as an instrument for public persuasion, he was also nephew of Sigmund Freud.
The American Tobacco Company hired bernays throughout the 1920s to work as their public relations head working on Lucky Strike cigarettes. He sent a group of models to march in the New York City Parade and told the media that women’s rights marchers would light “Torches of Freedom”. Bernays signalled the girls to light their Lucky Strike cigarettes in front of the cameras and shortly after The New York Times printed an article with the heading: “Group of Girls Puff at Cigarettes as gesture of ‘Freedom’”. In doing this, Bernays helped to break the stigma of women smoking in public, he also helped to sell a shitload of cancer sticks.
Hitler's PR
When Hitler was trying to conquer the world back in 1919 he used a number of different methods to spin his vicious ideologies, something that became an essential part of his rise to power. Nazi propaganda came in a number of different forms including: magazines, textbooks, comics, films, posters and radio. In his literary work Mein Kampf , Hitler gave his thoughts on propaganda stating,
"All propaganda must be presented in a popular form and must fix its intellectual level so as not to be above the heads of the least intellectual of those to whom it is directed."
In hindsite, Hitler with the help of pal Joseph Goebbelssucceeded to both pioneer and revolutionise what we now know as public relations. Evil Bastards.
